Over time research has shown that 1 in 4 of us will experience some form mental health problems at some point in our lives. North Star Counselling Service was first established in 2016 with the aim to help each individual work through their issues and grow in to the person they wish to become.
I understand that it can be very daunting and anxiety levels can rise when accessing counselling for the first time. I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that I am here to help and support you with those overwhelming feelings.
Counselling is a form of talking therapy which allows people to discuss their issues and difficult feelings in a safe and confidentil environment. Counselling can mean different things to different people, but it is usually seen as a process for those who want to change something in their lives or who want to explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.
For children, the process of counselling can be a little different and may be carried out in the form of Play Therapy. Children sometimes struggle to verbalise their thoughts and can find it easier to communicate their feelings through creativity, imagination and play.
Counselling can offer a safe and confidential space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings, and where you can begin to understand your emotions at a deeper level. For some, having this space to reflect can be enough to help them heal. Counselling can offer a non-judgemental environment where you can learn to understand your behaviour and have a clearer outlook on your problems.
By raising your self-awareness, you can also gain an understanding of other people and their way of viewing the world. This can change the way you interpret words and actions from those around you, strengthening relationships and learning to let go of negitive past experiences.
